the canyon bakery

I love when I find a cute spot with tasty eats in my neighborhood. Perhaps because there aren’t all that many options here in Topanga? The Canyon Bakery is a local bakery churning out freshly milled whole grain baked goods, naturally leavened breads, pastries & pizzas here in the canyon! They take online orders for Friday pick ups, but currently are only “open” as a weekend pop up, aka Sunday Fundays! After stalking their Instagram for a while, we finally made it over to try out the goods. Their freshly milled Hundo whole grain Sonora cinnamon rolls had caught my eye, so that was a must order, and it did not disappoint! The giant spinach & cheese spelt croissant swirl was flakey and delicious as well. Talk about up my alley!

If you’re a fan of freshly baked breads, definitely grab a loaf or two to take home. The sprouted ancient grain and the chocolate cherry rye loaves were both big hits in our house, whether turned into a sandwich or eaten alone! There are plenty of gluten free things on the menu as well, including bagels, muffins and a millet bread, so don’t feel like you have to miss out if you happen to have a sensitivity to wheat or gluten. I’m also happy to see that on subsequent trips, The Canyon Bakery seems to be expanding their menu a bit, to include exciting things like whole grain focaccias studded with purple potatoes & castelvetrano olives, apricot jam brioche buns with creme fraiche & mint, and roasted shallot & gruyere buns! Next on my list to try are their Hundo spelt pizzas! Yum!

topanga mother bread

topanga mother sourdough bread

To me, there’s not much better than freshly baked bread. The smell, the texture, and the taste all just makes my heart sing. You can get good bread many places these days- from farmers markets to grocery stores to the bakeries themselves- the options are endless. But truly great bread is a bit harder to come by, and that’s why I was so delighted to find Topanga Mother, a local bread dealer here in my neighborhood that delivers freshly baked bread to your doorstep! Naturally fermented sourdough breads, made using only organic flour and whole grains, are the focus here, and each fully hydrated dough is hand shaped into a super delicious loaf for you to enjoy at home.

The menu at Topanga Mother is simple- country, seeded country, raisin pan, and olive loaves are available to order. While classics are great, I love me a mix-in, so naturally I gravitated toward their olive studded and cinnamon raisin loaves. The ratio of mix-ins to bread is high here, just how I like it, so every piece includes a juicy, delectable bite. The whole family is fan, and we blazed through our delivery quite quickly. Topanga Mother delivers every Wednesday and Sunday, and you can contact them if you have a special request, or need a bread fix on other days of the week as well! Talk about top notch service. I have to say, opening my front door to find freshly baked (still warm!) sourdough on my doorstep is one of my favorite ways to start the day!

healthy zucchini bread

It’s that time of year when zucchini squash are abundant, and I have to say, I’m not mad about it. While it’s common to use zucchini in savory meals like fired up on the grill alongside some meat, or turned into zoodles (aka zucchini noodles), they also make a wonderful baking ingredient! When grated and drained of their moisture, you can add this green veggie to countless baked good without compromising flavor. It’s such a clutch way to sneak in an extra serving of veggies for toddlers, or any picky eater for that matter! There are tons of zucchini bread recipes out there, and just like banana bread, you can make it as healthy or as sinful as you desire. This version is hearty and nutrient-packed, not too sweet, but still super delish thanks to ingredients like banana, flaxseed, almond flour, and (duh) zucchini. You can do a mix of flours like I did, or stick to one, but I find using a combo of both heartier and lighter flours is a nice way to balance things out. I went with a gluten-free version here (paleo if you sub out the brown rice flour as well), but feel free to use whole grain flours if you prefer. I typically do! I should note, since it’s sweetened just with banana, this bread is not overwhelmingly sweet. Make sure to use super ripe bananas, or if you prefer things on the sweeter side, you can opt to add a touch of maple syrup. I find once I add various toppings (fig jam, perhaps?), it’s sufficiently sweet for my tastes. Not to mention the citrus zest (use a microplaner) really adds a nice little kick. Mix-ins are another must in my book- they make for such great texture- so feel free to add in whatever your heart desires. Toasted nuts, raisins, shredded coconut, or even chocolate chips would all be tasty here. I kept things a bit simple this time, as I wanted my one year old to be able to dig in without any choking hazards ;) I’ll take a slice toasted and spread with a generous smear of nut butter, please. Yum!

Healthy Zucchini Bread:

  • 1 cup mashed banana (about 2 medium bananas)

  • 2 cups grated zucchini, excess moisture drained (about 2 medium zucchini)

  • 3 large eggs

  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil

  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

  • 1 tsp citrus zest (orange, lemon, or lime!)

  • 2 cups flour (I did a mix of almond, coconut & brown rice)

  • 1/2 cup ground flaxseed

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1/4 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt

  • 1/2 cup preferred mix-ins (walnuts, raisins, coconut, chocolate chips etc)

Preheat oven to 350 degree. Line a loaf pan with parchment paper, and add a bit of coconut oil or nonstick spray. In a large bowl whisk together banana, zucchini, eggs, coconut oil, vanilla extract & citrus zest until smooth. In a separate bowl, combine flours, flaxseed, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg & salt. Then mix dry ingredients into wet until just incorporated. If your batter is super thick, you may thin it out a bit with 1/4-1/2 cup almond milk. Stir in any desired mix-ins. Add batter to loaf pan and bake for 45-55 minutes (or until cake tester comes out clean). Allow the bread to cool a few minutes before removing it from the pan with the ends of the parchment. Place it on a cooling rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy with your preferred spread- butter, nut butter, or marmalade are all great choices!

turmeric rye banana bread

Honestly, who doesn’t love a good banana bread?? I feel like it’s one of life’s simple, but oh so delicious pleasures, and always nice to have on hand. It can be made as healthy or as decadent as you want, but I tend to love the heartier loaves chock full of good-for-you ingredients like whole grains, nuts, and seeds. My husband and I have been on a bit of a banana bread kick, and he recently whipped up such a unique & tasty version, I just had to share. Fresh ground turmeric really shines through in both flavor and appearance, giving this moist loaf a beautiful golden hue, and rye flour lends a hearty, but not overpowering hand. The pecans, hemp hearts, and chia seeds add a lovely texture, and the raw honey creates just the right amount of sweetness. It’s damn near perfect on its own, but lightly toasted with a pat of butter (or carrot cake jam, as pictured above), and it’s absolute heaven!

Turmeric Rye Banana Bread:

  • 7 oz whole wheat flour

  • 3 oz rye flour

  • 1 tsp ground turmeric

  • 1/8 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 4 oz butter, melted

  • 4 oz raw honey

  • 2 large eggs

  • 4 extra ripe bananas (2 mashed, 1 chunky, 1 sliced)

  • 4 oz almond (or other non-dairy) milk

  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup pecans, toasted & chopped

  • 1/4 cup hemp hearts

  • 1/4 cup chia seeds

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Sift both flours, baking soda, turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, and salt into a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, mix the butter and honey together until smooth. Add the eggs, mashed bananas, almond and vanilla extract to the butter mixture until well combined. Then add in the chunky banana pieces as well. Fold in the flour mixture, then gently add the pecans, hemp hearts, and chia seeds. Grease a loaf tin, and pour in the batter, smoothing and evening out if necessary. Top with reserved sliced bananas. Transfer to the oven and bake for about 50-60 minutes, or until the top is golden-brown and bananas are lightly caramelized. Remove from the oven and cool in the tin for a few minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before serving.

tartine bianco

I was so excited when I heard that the Tartine Bakery group was opening here in Los Angeles. I have a huge soft spot for this San Francisco-based restaurant and bakery, so to have one open so close to me was wonderful news. The Manufactory, as its known, is also conveniently located at The Row DTLA, which is a cute open-air facility with plenty of fun shops and restaurants to pop into. Whether you’re in the mood for a more formal sit-down meal, or looking to grab a quick coffee or soft serve to-go, The Manufactory’s got you covered. There’s The Market for tasty flatbreads and specialty food items, The Ice Cream & Coffee Window for drinks, baked goods and ice cream, Tartine Bianco serving seasonal Cali-Italian cuisine, and finally Alameda Supper Club for a more elevated private dining experience. All of that housed under one roof! The space itself is beautiful too- huge windows that allow light to flood in at all hours of the day- with a super modern, industrial feel, and a large, shared open kitchen.

On a couple recent visits, we’ve dined at Tartine Bianco, the all-day restaurant whipping up all kinds of delights with fresh ingredients from the farmers market. It’s very comparable to its San Fran counterpart, Tartine Manufactory, a place I’ve dined at and absolutely loved. One main focus of the menu is the famous Tartine Bread (duh!), and food good reason. Choose from toasts, smørrebrøds, and flatbreads, or just get the bread basket with a couple of dips and go to town. Oh my glory, it’s honestly some of the best bread I have ever tasted. Baked to perfection, doughy and chewy on the inside, with the perfectly crisp, crunchy crust. Do yourself a favor and order a loaf to-go as well so you can keep the enjoyment going for a couple more days! The rest of the meal did not disappoint either, from the grilled beets with chermoula to the lamb shank with sunchokes to the malted brownie sundae, you really cannot go wrong. And how pretty is that chicken liver toast?! It’s practically a work of art. Click through the slideshow below to check out the rest of our fantastic meal, and get ready to drool! I look forward to picking up some bread and pastries, and perhaps (read: definitely) making a pit stop at the Ice Cream Window for some delicious soft serve very soon!
